Year 2 Explore Castles

Year 2 Explore Castles | BSB Sanlitun - Year 2 Explore Castles

This term, our Year 2 children have embarked on an exciting journey back in time to answer the question: "Who lived in a castle?" Through a range of engaging activities and hands-on experiences, they have explored the different roles in a medieval castle, uncovered the secrets of castle life, and connected their learning across multiple subjects.

Discovering Medieval Jobs

One of the highlights of our learning has been discovering the various jobs within a medieval castle. The children explored roles such as the cook, messenger, carpenter, watchman, marshal, gardener, herald, and candlemaker. They learned about the feudal system and how society was structured in medieval times. The children had deep discussions about fairness in medieval society, linking it to our Learner Ambition of Compassion. A role-play session brought history to life as the children prepared a banquet, made beautiful candles, built furniture, and practised battle strategies in a training camp. These hands-on experiences helped them understand how each role contributed to the castle's daily life.

Creative Connections

To explore medieval folklore, the children sculpted dragon eyes in clay, paying close attention to texture and detail. They also enjoyed a pottery club field trip, where they painted ceramic dragons, experimenting with mixing colours. These artistic activities encouraged creativity while deepening their understanding of medieval myths and symbolism.

To conclude the unit, the children (and their parents!) dressed up in medieval attire and shared a medieval banquet experience, celebrating their learning in a truly immersive way.
