Dover Court International School has been awarded the Bronze Award in the Eco-Schools Awards 2024 from WWF Singapore. This remarkable achievement highlights the hard work and dedication of our Primary Planet Protectors—an enthusiastic group of Years 3 to 6 students—who are on a mission to make our school more eco-friendly.

Throughout this journey, our students in Planet Protectors have engaged in various activities to promote sustainability. They’ve learned about environmental issues, created educational videos, and developed a comprehensive action plan to continue their efforts. They understand the importance of protecting our planet and are committed to making a positive impact. As Aara, a Year 5 student, expressed, “One small change can make a big difference. Never give up. It’s very possible if we all work hard together to protect the planet and reduce plastic use,”. Mrs Clark, Dover Court International School Primary Teacher and the Planet Protectors CCA Lead emphasised the students’ efforts: “Every week, we meet to plan our next steps, from checking that doors are closed and electricity is off to reducing single-use plastic. We have written letters to Mr Dyer, the canteen, and Mr Buckley to advocate for more sustainable changes,” she said.

The Planet Protectors have also initiated a plant competition to enhance greenery around the school and created engaging videos to educate their peers about recycling. The students have collaborated on various creative projects, including a stop-motion film about reducing plastic waste and upcycling initiatives, like building structures from empty plastic bottles. “We worked together as a team by making videos, including stop-motion videos, and working on projects, like building a chair out of plastic bottles. We all cooperated to achieve this goal,” explained Anmay in Year 4.

Looking ahead, the Planet Protectors have ambitious goals to further their sustainability efforts. “We are planning to change the plastic fruit cups in the canteen and also switch to more sustainable forks and spoons,” said Evelyn from Year 5. Mairi from Year 3 added, “Pass on the word,” emphasising the importance of spreading awareness among their classmates and families.

Dover Court International School Principal, Richard Dyer, expressed pride in this achievement, stating, “This is an incredible achievement for Dover Court International School and the first step on our journey to becoming even more sustainable as a school community. Well done to all our student leaders!”

The Planet Protectors are committed to making a difference, and as Rafi in Year 4 pointedly noted, “We want to share that the planet is dying, so we need to make an impact to ensure a sustainable future.” Together, they are proving that small actions can lead to significant change. We are so proud to celebrate this achievement and support our students as they work tirelessly to enhance our school’s eco-friendly initiatives.

“We are the Planet Protectors and here to protect the planet!”
