Partnering for Success: College Advising at Every Step

Partnering for Success: College Advising at Every Step - College Advising
College Advising
College Advising at North Broward Prep is a personalized, grade-by-grade journey that helps students discover their passions, build confidence, and prepare for life beyond high school. Through academic guidance, leadership development, and global opportunities, we partner with families to support each student’s unique path to college and beyond.

College Advising is an integral part of student success at North Broward Prep. It provides the support and guidance students need to discover their passions and prepare for life beyond NBPS. Each grade level represents a unique phase in the college readiness journey, and here’s how we approach it:

9th Grade: The Discovering Phase

As students transition from middle school to high school, we help them adjust academically and socially. This is when they begin to understand the importance of their grades and how they set the tone for future success. We encourage involvement in clubs and organizations to help students find their belonging on campus. Each student is required to complete 100 hours of community service as part of their graduation requirements, and we ensure they get a strong start on this commitment.

10th Grade: The Focus-In Phase

Students begin to build on their interests and deepen their involvement. We encourage them to explore leadership roles within their clubs and organizations and start narrowing down their extracurricular focus. This is also when we help students begin building their resumes, prepare for the PSAT, and start meeting with their assigned college advisor.

11th Grade: The Bringing-It-Together Phase

Students connect directly with college representatives; we have over 100 college representatives that visit NBPS each fall from across the country and around the world. These meetings give students insight into what colleges are looking for and help them refine their college list. Our advising office hosts workshops and specialized college fairs, including an arts-focused fair and the Sunshine Invitational, a large-scale event in collaboration with other independent schools that bring hundreds of college reps to campus.

12th Grade: The Aligning Priorities and Goals Phase

Students work closely with their advisors to finalize applications, review essays, and continue building relationships with college representatives. They also explore scholarship opportunities and attend workshops. Wednesday walk-in hours offer additional support and guidance as they prepare for the next step.

College readiness at NBPS is about more than academics;it’s about helping students discover what makes them unique.

“Challenge yourself to think outside of the box and tap into the opportunities we offer here at NBPS. Colleges are looking for what makes YOU different.’” — Candice Adams, Director of College Advising

Students pursue passion projects, conduct global research, and present at major conferences. Through partnerships with UNICEF, Juilliard, MIT, and IMG, they earn grants, join expeditions to Tanzania and or Switzerland, and showcase their work at events that connect students together from all over the globe like the NAE Summit.

We especially support 9th and 10th graders as they navigate academic stress and begin shaping their identities. This journey is personal and collaborative, involving families every step of the way.

“Meet your student where they are. Be intentional. Choose a college where they’ll thrive socially and academically.” — Candice Adams, Director of College Advising

College Advising is more than selecting the right college;it’s about helping students find their passion and purpose. We’re not just a resource; we’re your partner throughout the journey.
